You may want to consider moving, Lizzie. Drive through cocktail service in Louisiana not unknown. Probably been official changes over the years, but it's amazing what you can find off the main road. I will say it again -- it is not FAIR for a bunch of newbies with tons of stock option money to invade an area, drive real estate prices through the roof and then expect the original residents to pay up, move or die. Is this some kind of hi-tech Manifest Destiny, or something? One of the reasons, American GIs have been resented in parts of the world where they have been sent to help, is because they completely **** up the local economy by paying too much for everything. Suddenly the locals can't afford anything because merchant classes cater strictly to the guys with the big bucks. Prop 13 has been the whipping boy for government agencies, education, and agents for social engineering in CA, forever. 13 rather simply denied them a convenient way to get their hands deeper into your pockets. In this country, wealth belongs to the citizen, not the state. Sit down sometime and figure out what your real tax rate is -- add income tax, SS tax, sales tax, property tax, tax on gasoline, tax on phone calls, tax on your vehicles, tax for licenses of every description, tax on your savings, development impact fees, bond issues and, esp. in California, "user fees" for everything under the sun. There is no more FREE public stuff, Lizzie. I got dinged by a truck in a crosswalk a couple of years ago and was dutifully transported about a mile and a half to a hospital ER. That ride alone got me a bill just shy of 1K from the Elk Grove, CA Fire and Emer. Services District (or whatever the name of it was). So where ARE the tax dollars going????? The problem isn't old people not paying their way -- It's mostly new people who tax the system. If old people end up with a chunk of change, most will need every friggin' penny for assisted living of some degree in the end. Old homeowners aren't driving the need for new classrooms, new cops, new jails, medical services for the criminal and the indigent and the illegal immigrant. You can't expect them to just get out of your way, for God's sake. And, please make a note -- 13 did not cause high real estate prices. There are areas all over the country with high real estate prices (although perhaps none as truly ridiculous as those in the heart of Silicon Valley). Parts of the "conversation" on this subject have had an eerie feel of people wishing for gramps to hurry up and croak so they can get on with the important business of fighting over his stuff. Peace
