I am not suggesting that Vanderslice is anything less than a top-notch executive - he has shown that in his career to date.

If the scenario I proposed was in fact the case (A more comprehensive deal was in the works, and fell apart, putting Vanderslice at risk in IBM), then DELL would have seized the opportunity to get a great addition to their staff...

My point was that this seemed unlikely to me to be a part of some new closer relationship with IBM, more likely the opposite - it probably signals that a closer deal fell apart. Probably the DELL execs were able to see the hook hidden in the bait in whatever was being offered by IBM, and backed off...

hire someone into one of the top positions just to save his career.
A soft landing would not be a direct report to MD, A vice president or something maybe. This is a strategic role.
