I am reading "Morgan: American Financier" by Jean Strouse. I am struck by the parallels of the development of the railroad, steel, and oil industries to the development of the internet. The same issues of compatibility, market share, and economies of scale appear to be as relevant today as they were in the second half of the last century. Also, the winners wrote the rules--they didn't wait for someone to tell them what the rules were. Many of the competitors never made money, but he people who got the biggest market share eventually made a lot of money.
