Many churches go off the rails at that point. I.E Thinking that church membership has somewhat to do with salvation. It is to put the Horse before the Cart. Men are saved by the work of Jesus and the Holy Spirit causing them to come unto Christ through true repentance. Those who are truly born-again and not just intellectually persuaded will soon realize that they are not called in a vacuum. Rather they must not forsake the assembling of themselves together ' if possible '. Hebrews 10:25 Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching. In the "body" men both rebuke one another and encourage one another to stay in the "way". It is our duty of course to support with our talents and tithes the most pure church and worship that we can. Unfortunately many who find themselves in a "higher level of understanding" and purity fall pray to the sin of Lucifer. 1Tim 3:6 Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil. 7 Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil. Satan takes delight in the destruction of Truth and Church Bodies. He desires to destroy the most pure assemblies and to put in their place impure , false and cultic counterfeits to distract and trouble God's people. Satan cannot however ultimately deceive the Elect of God but only trouble them. Matthew 24:24 For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect. I have seen so many churches go off the tracks thinking that "unless you belong to them" you are unfaithful to Christ. It is not hard for them to get there. You may have seen this first hand. " Covenant breakers " ( Truce breakers KJV ) are not to inherit heaven and they then say that if you quit their church you will be a covenant breaker and lost. Romans 1:31 Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful: 2 Timothy 3:3 Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, This is but one approach to the unscriptural understanding of the place of the church in the life of believers. Paul warned men that Knowledge was dangerous in the hands of sinful flesh and blood... 1 Corinthians 8:1 Now as touching things offered unto idols, we know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffeth up, but charity edifieth. Here Paul teaches that a man ought not to look down upon the weak in the faith but rather to love them even to the point of giving up what is lawful to do rather than hurt those who have a conscience toward God concerning what "they perceive" to be sin though it be lawful. The Church then falls into the same fate the Galatians did. Galatians 3:3 Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh? They begin to see the Church not as an 'ordained means' of Salvation but as "the" source of Salvation. The Church is to 'feed' the Sheep not 'make or justify' the sheep. They begin to confuse the 'invisible church and the visible church'. I'm sorry to hear you as all men likely have suffered through bad experiences. Do not through out the baby with the bath water however. We are called to join ourselves together in the visible church as best we can. Also do not judge the truth of what was taught by the way it was handled. That is a grave error that I myself have fallen to numerous times. We must judge truth bu God's Word and not by those who may have mishandled it. Wish you well in all things. Have no idea what "Nothetic" is or I may know it by a different name . What is it?
