Gradient Technologies Provides Application Security and Personalization with NetCrusader/CORBA; Integrates with Inprise Visibroker to Secure Component-Based Applications

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 14, 1999--Gradient(R) Technologies, Inc. today announced the availability of NetCrusader(TM)/CORBA, the next in a family of products that provide access management solutions for e-business applications. For organizations needing to deploy secure, CORBA-based applications, NetCrusader/CORBA will greatly reduce the time to market. In its basic form, NetCrusader/CORBA secures applications without requiring software modifications to those applications. In its advanced usage, NetCrusader/CORBA provides personalized, sub-application, parameter-level access management.

"We were looking for an out-of-box security solution from a trusted vendor. Gradient's experience in the security space was clear from the outset and NetCrusader/CORBA is the only product that offers an immediate solution," commented Jia-Ling Lin, Eidea Labs, after beta testing NetCrusader/CORBA.

The first implementation of NetCrusader/CORBA is for Visibroker from Inprise Corporation (NASDAQ: INPR). Jeff Barca-Hall, chief technology officer, Inprise Corporation, commented, "We're very pleased that Gradient selected Visibroker for their first implementation of complete CORBA security services. NetCrusader/CORBA provides additional flexibility for our growing base of customers who are building and deploying secure object applications."

The CORBA standard for distributed objects, published by the Object Management Group (OMG) specifies three increasing levels of security for distributed object applications: Level 0 (basic SSL security), Level 1 ("bolt-on" security), and Level 2 ("fine-grained" security). NetCrusader/CORBA fully supports security through Level 2. At Level 1, NetCrusader/CORBA secures existing legacy applications without requiring software modifications. At Level 2, developers can implement sophisticated, personalized access without embedding complex security logic in the application.

Richard Soley, chairman and CEO of the OMG, praised Gradient for the work with CORBA Level 2 Security. "Gradient is helping to move the arena of e-business forward by incorporating CORBA Level 2 Security into NetCrusader/CORBA. NetCrusader/CORBA will allow users to leverage CORBA's ability to integrate applications across the enterprise while still ensuring the safe, secure transmission of crucial data. We are very glad to see Gradient bring this product to market."

The importance of Level 2 Security was affirmed by two of the beta sites: "NetCrusader/CORBA offers an easy-to-use administration GUI, Level 1 Security capability, and the Level 2 Security API's we require. In particular, we need support for multiple security domains and composite delegation. In addition, Gradient's sales and technical support staff provided quality service -- they were very responsive to our requests for information regarding our specific project requirements," commented Julie Baker, director of technical staff, Odyssey Research Associates.

Thyra Rovner, software engineer at Scientific Research added, "NetCrusader appears to be a complete Level 2 Security solution. Installation is very simple and there is support for multiple security domains unlike many of the competitor's products. Finally, Gradient's sales and support staff are extremely responsive and a pleasure to work with."

NetCrusader/CORBA leverages investments in existing technologies by supporting best-in-class authentication mechanisms such as PKIs from Baltimore Technologies, Entrust(R) Technologies and VeriSign, Inc.; username/password, and user proprietary solutions through an open API, as well as industry standard LDAP directories from Innosoft International Inc. and Netscape Communications.

"The significance of the CORBA addition to the NetCrusader family is that it is the only integrated Web and CORBA access management solution for companies implementing e-business," commented Michael Jannery, vice president of marketing for Gradient. "NetCrusader goes farther than any of the other access management "point solutions" to extend security from the browser back into the enterprise."

Oh well, easy come easy go.
After such a long haul with this I just didn't have the stomach to sell so early into this rally.

Lewis, this may sound trite, but I think you are talking yourself in circles with this market cap dilema in comparing price to sales. When price to sales is calculated, it normally takes into account the market cap. This is because the sales figure is sales/share. Then you take price/share over sales/share, the shares cancel and you get price to sales ratio. Your market cap dilema is solved in this case..

hope that helps..
