The original HMO concept as developed by Kaiser Permamente was just fine. It worked for everyone. Then the for-profit health insurance companies hijacked the initials, distorted the original concept out of all recognition, and strong-armed doctors and medical clinics into signing up to avoid being frozen out of insurance-dominated markets, hospital referrals, and even hospital privileges. The "new" "HMO" concept alienates everyone and serves no one -- not patients or their relatives, not doctors, not taxpayers, not even even insurance company shareholders. Only the bean counters are pleased.
