Company Press Release

Intel Leads in 10/100 Network Connections for Fifth Consecutive Quarter

The Industry Leader in Gigabit Ethernet Network Adapter Cards According to Dell'Oro Report

HILLSBORO, Ore.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 13, 1999--For the fifth consecutive quarter, Intel Corporation has emerged as the leading provider of 10/100 megabit-per-second (Mbps) Ethernet connections, including network adapter cards (NICs), LAN on motherboard (LOM) solutions and network adapter silicon.

According to the Dell'Oro Group's most recent LANScape quarterly report, Intel achieved and expanded its leadership in total 10/100 Mbps Ethernet connections in 1998 and continued its leadership position throughout the first three quarters of 1999.(b)

In the Gigabit Ethernet network connectivity market segment, Intel outpaced its nearest competitor during the third quarter of 1999 to take the lead in sales of 1000 Mbps Ethernet network interface cards (NICs), according to the Dell'Oro Group report.(b) The Intel® PRO/1000 Gigabit Server Adapter unit share increased to 47 percent in this category, while its nearest competitor's share declined to 33 percent.(b)

Intel attributes much of the gain during the past five quarters to the introduction and rapid acceptance of its new family of adapter and LOM solutions based on the Intel® 82559 Fast Ethernet Controller. The new Intel® PRO/100 family of adapters, which have grown faster than any previous Intel NIC product, are the information technology (IT) industry's first Wired for Management (WfM) 2.0-compliant solutions and are the first to provide common software drivers across desktops, servers and mobile PC platforms. Intel® SingleDriver technology provides commonality across a variety of platforms to help simplify the configuration and ease migration to new operating systems, thereby lowering IT costs.

Intel's lead in the Gigabit Ethernet marketplace was also bolstered by its most recent software update, which increased performance to 771 Mbps(c) and introduced Linux(a) drivers. The leading ten personal computer original equipment manufacturers and all leading server vendors are currently shipping solutions using Intel's Fast Ethernet or Gigabit Ethernet technology.

The Dell'Oro Group is an independent research and consulting firm specializing in strategic competitive and market analysis in the networking industry.
