LCI-SMARTpen To Provide CBQ, Inc. With Biometric E-Business Security Solutions
TUESDAY, DECEMBER 14, 1999 9:07 AM
- BusinessWire

'S-HERTOGENBOSCH, Netherlands/DALLAS, Dec 14, 1999 (BW HealthWire) --

--Dec. 14, 1999-- Signature Authentication Device to Replace Fingerprint

Biometrics At Company's Online Health Care and Payment Subsidiaries LCI Technology Group N.V. (AEX:LCI), today announced an agreement with CBQ, Inc. (OCTBB:CBQI), an e-business solutions provider, to implement LCI-SMARTpen(R) BiAS (TM) End-to-End (E2E(TM)) security solutions at its CBQcare.net and Prioritycash.com subsidiaries.

CBQcare.net, an e-healthcare provider, will use LCI-SMARTpen to enable its Internet-based medical applications such as authentication of prescriptions and transfer of medical records. Physicians using CBQcare.net will use the SMARTpen for activities such as authenticating their identity on prescriptions and continuing education course work. Prioritycash.com, a portal that provides credit card approval and electronic funds transfer (EFT) services, will use the SMARTpen to secure credit card transactions and EFTs. Prioritycash will provide the SMARTpens to some of its customers for use in their businesses.

Rollout of this initiative among CBQ's subsidiaries will occur in two phases. Initially, SMARTpens will be distributed to CBQ's client base of up to 500 physicians. Once the infrastructure is fully developed and operational, CBQ will then adopt use of the SMARTpen to facilitate and enable other e-commerce applications within the medical field.

"The LCI-SMARTpen addresses two of the biggest obstacles facing the online health care industry -- security and trust," said Sam Asseer, chairman and CEO of LCI Technology Group. "The SMARTpen's virtually foolproof authentication of the signer provides physicians, patients and health care organizations a secure online environment. As we learn more about e-business and the need for security within the medical sector, we recognize the significant role that the SMARTpen can play in bringing benefits to both patients and health care professionals."

CBQ CEO John Harris said, "We decided to replace the fingerprint biometrics we were using with the SMARTpen. The ease of use and effectiveness of the SMARTpen make it a product that we know our customers will view as an effective online tool. To be successful, Internet companies, especially in the health care industry, must assure their customers that their online transactions are secure and we feel the SMARTpen will provide that assurance."

LCI-SMARTpen(R) is a ball-pen that writes on regular paper and uses sensors to allow the authentication of people through the biometric characteristics of their signature. The dynamics are unique to the individual user and thus allow for the authentication of the signer, as well as time and location.

According to a recent Internet survey, online activity by doctors has increased 875 percent since 1997 and doctor-patient communications via e-mail has jumped 200 percent in the last year. Securing medical related transactions on the Internet is vital to the online health care market as more and more physicians and patients begin communicating via the Web. CBQ expects to implement/deploy the SMARTpen within Q1 of 2000.
