HARRY CARR NAMED TELLIUM CHAIRMAN AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

Former Lucent Executive and Yurie Systems President to Lead Optical
Switch Innovator, Tellium, Inc.

Oceanport, NJ, January 31, 2000 Tellium, Inc., announced the appointment of Harry J. Carr to the position of Chairman and Chief Executive Officer by its Board of Directors. Carr, who has held numerous senior executive positions in the telecommunications and data communications industry, assumes his responsibilities immediately.

Mr. Carr has held a variety of positions across the telecommunications and data communications industry over the past 22 years. Most recently, Mr. Carr served as President of Lucent's Broadband Carrier Networks unit, its multi-billion dollar data switching unit focused on the service provider marketplace. The unit is comprised of a number of high profile startups, including former Ascend units, Cascade,NetStar, and Sahara as well as Yurie Systems and Nexabit in addition to traditional Lucent units covering other data networking equipment.

"Tellium is the world's best positioned optical switching company literally setting the global industry course for optical switching solutions," said Mr. Carr, new Chairman and CEO of Tellium. "We have some of the world's leading optical talent and we have the industry's first in service Optical Switches. Tellium will shortly be delivering our next generation switch, dramatically increasing density, reliability and capability. I am thrilled to have the unique opportunity to build this company for long term optical networking leadership."

Mr. Carr joined Lucent as a result of Lucent's acquisition of Yurie Systems, where he served as President and COO. He led the discussions that resulted in the acquisition of Yurie by Lucent.
Yurie was and is the market-leading provider of ATM access equipment. Mr.Carr led the company through the public equity markets, built the company's infrastructure for long term
success, established distribution agreements with Bay Networks, Ericsson,Lucent and other players, and in the process more than doubled the company's market
capitalization and revenues in less than 1 year.

"The optical networking market will grow at about 50% (CAGR) worldwide over the next five years, and we expect optical switches such as those Tellium is shipping to be one of the hot product areas within optical networking," said Dana Cooperson, director of Optical Networks and Transport, Ryan Hankin Kent "Successful CEOs are able to take companies, large or small, and harness the raw enthusiasm of a start up with the focus, organization and dependability typically found in more seasoned organizations. This is a period of building bridges to customers, suppliers and competitors alike for Tellium."

Ed Glassmeyer, a general partner of Oak Investment Partners and a founding investor in and director of Tellium, is enthusiastic about Harry Carr joining the team. "Harry
is a proven leader in building state of the art carrier class telecommunications systems. From AT&T to Yurie to Lucent he has consistently delivered exceptional results. Harry is ideally suited to extend Tellium's leadership in optical networking, and was by far our top choice for the CEO job."

Prior to joining Yurie Systems, Mr. Carr served in several executive capacities at AT&T, including Market Development Vice President of AT&T's Local Services Division and Vice President of AT&T's Defense Markets unit. Mr. Carr earned his finance degree from Fairfield University and his Law Degree from University of Connecticut.

"I am delighted to have Harry join us as CEO," said Richard Barcus, president of Tellium. "His experience in leading data communications companies at both the start-up and the billion dollar plus levels will be a tremendous advantage to Tellium as we enter this next critical phase in our growth."

Mr. Carr replaces interim Chairman and CEO Michael Hodges. Hodges returns to the venture capital community in Northern California.

Upstarts Shake Up Networking Industry
zdnet.com

"When I was with Yurie [Systems], we ran into a severe roadblock with service providers," said Harry Carr, who last week filled the vacant chief executive job at optical start-up Tellium(www.tellium.com). "Service providers would say, 'We're not going to do business with you directly unless you're backed by a large company.' "

Faced with no real alternative, Carr engineered the sale of Yurie to Lucent (www.lucent.com), where he served as president of broadband carrier networks before accepting his new job. As the new leader of Tellium, Carr said his first priority is to position the company for an initial public offering (IPO). Carr feels that unlike Yurie, Tellium which already has struck a $250 million deal with
Extant (www.extant.net) will not have a problem finding customers willing to deal with a start-up.

"They realize a lot of the innovation in the industry is happening here [at start-ups]," Carr said.

Avici and Tellium Announce First Public Demonstration of Dynamic Provisioning Between the IP and Optical Layers
Monday March 6, 8:06 am Eastern Time

Company Press Release

SOURCE: Avici Systems, Inc.

-Technical Demonstration Enables Carriers to Dynamically Provision Bandwidth, Illustrating Optical Switching and IP Products Working in Unison in the Optical Network-

At the Optical Fiber Communication (OFC) Conference: Tellium Optical Networks Booth Number # 2659 Avici Systems Booth Number # 2718

BALTIMORE, Md., March 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Tellium Optical Networks, and Avici Systems, Inc., today announced the first public, open interface demonstration of dynamic provisioning between IP routers and optical switches. Companies and industry alliances have been discussing possible applications on the optical layer and this demonstration represents the first time such theories have been proven in a test-environment.

The demonstration, at the 2000 Optical Fiber Communication (OFC) Conference, features the Avici Terabit Switch Router (TSR©) and the Tellium Aurora(TM) 32 Optical Switch working together in real-time, highlighting IP-over-optical solutions that allow intelligent optical switches to provide bandwidth on demand and also drop bandwidth when the application calls for less traffic. This collaborative innovation illustrates both how the core of the network will integrate services and protocols with the edge and the way carriers can dynamically provision bandwidth without human intervention -- all with unprecedented speed and flexibility.

``This first-ever public demonstration of dynamic provisioning of bandwidth directly to the optical domain is a giant step towards building efficient all- optical networks,' said Matthew Bross, chief technology officer of
Williams Communications (NYSE: WCG - news), an international provider of broadband services to the carrier marketplace. ``In today's competitive environment, time is of the essence and translates directly into revenues.
With current network solutions, this type of bandwidth provisioning takes up to several weeks. The solution demonstrated here would allow network providers to respond to peaks in data traffic demand in minutes.'

Williams Communications announced earlier it would include Avici high- speed equipment and software in its Terabit Test Bed project on a 2,000-mile segment of its nationwide broadband network.

The capabilities Tellium and Avici are demonstrating will lower provisioning time to a few minutes now, and a few seconds by the end of the year. ``This will essentially give carriers a just-in-time capability for managing bandwidth inventory. Carriers will be able to focus on generating revenues on value-added services without the hassle of long-lead times or forklift upgrades,' said Surya Panditi, president and CEO of Avici.

Krishna Bala, chief technical officer at Tellium says this demonstration represents a major engineering breakthrough. ``Our collective technical superiority and real-network expertise allow us to showcase the first ever live, working demonstration of an IP over optical solution, enabling an intelligent optical network. We are providing carriers with a glimpse of how they will benefit from next generation networks using a product such as Avici's TSR that takes advantage of the flexible bandwidth made available through Tellium's Aurora(TM) Optical Switch.'
