Johns Hopkins and Lucent Technologies to Develop Global Network for Telemedicine and Patient Access BALTIMORE, Dec. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Johns Hopkins Medicine and Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU - news) today announced an agreement to promote worldwide telemedicine applications through the use of information technology. Under the agreement, Lucent and Johns Hopkins International L.L.C., (JHI) -- formed earlier this year to advance the international objectives of Johns Hopkins Medicine -- will jointly design a secure, high-speed network to support Hopkins' growing telemedicine applications and to manage incoming and outgoing information. The network also is expected to make it easier for patients from around the world to access Hopkins physicians and facilities. Hopkins will develop international offerings in the areas of health care consulting, patient services, education and training, while Lucent will provide hardware, software and the networking expertise required to support these services. ``The new medical information management and delivery network will position Hopkins to extend its medical expertise to the far corners of the world,' said Steven Thompson, CEO of Johns Hopkins International. ``There is a growing demand in many parts of the world for the innovative medical services that Hopkins is known for,' he said. ``We want to meet that demand at Hopkins in a way that never existed before. The issue is no longer distance, it's time, and working with Lucent, we can tailor a sophisticated network that serves customers from the United States to Hong Kong.' According to Jim O'Neill, president of Lucent's Government Solutions business, there is a growing global market for communications networks to support health and human services agencies. ``We estimate that there's a multi-billion dollar market for global healthcare. And in the international arena, these are typically government initiatives,' O'Neill said. ``We're looking forward to working with Hopkins to pursue these initiatives so that hospitals and clinics around the world will have the opportunity to access the resources Hopkins provides.'
