A wise friend (gee, who was that) once said to me that writers can die many times. Luckily these deaths are not permanent but they still offer the opportunity to learn and grow and and understand more...a good way to look at a our emotional deaths, too, I think.

It has been told that when Medusa was beheaded
the blood spurting from the artery in her neck
gave birth to Pegasus, the winged horse of creativity,
and to Chrysador of the golden sword.
From her snake's blood came healing fluids
as well as the venom that causes war;
even on Athena's shield, Medusa's emblem frightens all enemies.
When Perseus rested Medusa's head at the water's edge
the soft ferns and sea grasses felt her power
and became hard filigree of precious coral.
And some poets tell how Athena, listening to the hiss
in Medusa's hair, invented the art of music.
