Canada's ATI Technologies Reportedly Reaches Set-Top Pact
with Sony
Tuesday, December 14, 1999 03:17 PM

NEW YORK -(Dow Jones)- Canadian graphics chip company ATI
Technologies Inc. has reportedly forged a set-top box deal
with Japan's Sony Corp., but the timing of the contract
announcement isn't yet established, an industry source said.

The announcement with Sony (SNE, news, msgs) may or may not
come at the Western Cable Show in Los Angeles this week,
the source said. Some analysts and investors are hoping to
hear of such a deal at the show, which runs Tuesday through
Friday.

ATI shares (ATYT, news, msgs) have been rising the past few
days because of building interest in the company's
non-personal-computer business. ATI has historically only
made its graphics chips for computers, but it is moving into
set-top boxes and other consumer electronics devices.

At the show, ATI is demonstrating its new RAGE HDTV and RAGE
SDTV graphics chips. It is also demonstrating its chips with
Microsoft Corp. (MSFT, news, msgs) for television on the PC.

Yorkton Securities Inc. analyst Byron Berry said ATI is a
well positioned as an "arms dealer" on both sides of the war
over whether television and the Internet will be delivered
through PCs or through televisions.

Agreed. This morning was a golden oppurtunity to keep things on a positive roll if they had announced the TI deal with an appropriate headline. Sometimes I feel like ATI PR hurts the company more than it helps -- they really need to get their act together!

Lets just hope that Nasdaq is not hugely negative like today. It hurts when a good news release comes out only to be quelled by sucky market conditions.
