Thread: biz.yahoo.com Tuesday December 14, 7:54 am Eastern Time Company Press Release First German CLEC to Offer SDSL Selects Netopia DSL Equipment KKF.net AG Will Supply Nokia-Compatible Netopia R7200 SDSL Router as Part of New Business-Class DSL Service Bundle NUREMBERG, Germany--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 14, 1999-- NETOPIA Inc., (Nasdaq:NTPA - news), a market leader in providing DSL Internet equipment and E-commerce Web platforms to small and medium-size businesses, today announced that KKF.net AG has selected the Netopia R7200 SDSL router for its new ``Speedconnect' business-class SDSL service. KKF.net is the first German CLEC to offer SDSL and will launch the new service in Germany in December, 1999.
The Netopia R7200 is a business-class SDSL router, interoperable with the Nokia (NYSE: NOK - news) ATM/DSL D50 Speedlink DSLAM which KKF.net deploys in more then 20 Central Offices. Because it is based on Netopia's unique R-series router architecture, the R7200 is distinguished in the DSL marketplace by its rich feature set which includes built-in security, ISDN and Analog dial backup and multiple management, routing and diagnostic tools. This feature set delivers unique levels of value and reliability to the small business end user.
Symmetric Digital Subscriber Line (SDSL) technology enables inexpensive, high-speed digital transmission over regular copper phone lines. Because it provides a fully symmetric and permanent, ``always-on' connection, SDSL is the perfect choice for business applications that require high bandwidth in both directions, such as file transfer and access to a corporate intranet.
``We are extremely pleased to become a partner of Netopia, as their R7200 SDSL router offers a combination of features that are highly valued by businesses, including ease-of-management, unique expandability and business-class routing,' said Marc Keilwerth, General Manager at KKF.net.
Speedconnect, KKF.net's new SDSL service for German businesses, offers high speed Internet access for a fixed fee (``Flatrate') that includes a telephone line, Internet connectivity, and a Netopia R7200 router. Six levels of service are available: for example, 192 Kbps for DM 487 (c. $270) per month plus setup costs and installation, excluding tax.
Like all Netopia routers, the Netopia R7200 incorporates industry-leading capabilities which make it a very attractive solution both for small and medium size businesses and for the ISPs, CLECs and VARs that provision them. Features include:
-- Secure VPN, which lets businesses easily set up extranets for partners and vendors, securely connect branch offices, and provide secure LAN access to remote and mobile workers. Netopia's VPN implementation allows its R-series routers to initiate secure tunnels (as a PPTP Access Concentrator, or "PAC"), terminate secure tunnels (as a PPTP Network Server or "PNS"), or provide NAT pass-through for PPTP connections. This means that small businesses can implement a business-class VPN solution using just a Netopia router and the client software built into the Windows operating system. No NT Server or external VPN equipment is needed. -- MultiNAT, a sophisticated NAT extension that provides the security of a NAT "wall" to hide LAN IP addresses, while providing flexibility in the use of multiple IP addresses offered by an ISP. -- A built-in firewall that uses packet filtering and network address translation to protect a company's network resources. This enhanced security is especially important to DSL customers, as DSL connections are "always on." -- A built-in 8-port hub, which means that small businesses can use the R7200 to set up their network as well as to connect their network to the Internet. -- A uniquely extensible modular architecture which allows the router to be expanded with a number of add-on kits and upgraded to new WAN technologies as they become available. -- Analog or ISDN dial back-up, which ensures that small business DSL customers not only have redundant access to the Internet but redundant access to local servers from the Internet. Back-up is a standard feature which customers can utilize either by connecting a third party external modem or ISDN terminal adapter to the router's auxiliary port, or by purchasing an optional internal Netopia analog or ISDN WANlet upgrade kit. -- Sophisticated diagnostic tools such as Ping, Trace Route, Syslog and Telnet client. These tools are especially useful to ISPs and CLECs, as they allow for faster problem-solving and thus optimize customer service. -- Sophisticated management and monitoring tools such as SNMP, Telnet and out-of-band management, which mean that all management of the router can be performed remotely by the customer's ISP or CLEC. ``The Netopia R7200 SDSL Router allows customers to enjoy the full power of DSL Internet access through a reliable, high speed connection that enables them to conduct and develop their business online. We look forward to working with KKF.net to develop SDSL service throughout Germany,' said Jerome Anastase, Netopia's European General Manager.
