MSFT and Linux

If there is any doubt that MSFT intends to be a player in the Linux space, look at microsoft.com which clearly shows that MSFT is taking Linux very seriously.

My personal view is that it is likely we will see an MS Linux distribution within the next year. Far from being a threat to MSFT, Linux represents a huge opportunity for MSFT to attack the proprietary UNIX vendors on their home turf. There is no reason why an MS-Linux distribution cannot garner a dominant share of the Linux market the way MS-DOS took over the DOS market. While theoretically "free", very few people have the time, skill, or inclination to download the Linux source and configure and support it for their own use. This, after all, is the basis for RHAT's business model. MSFT has the distribution, marketing, and support infrastructure to provide a very attractive Linux solution to this market segment while helping to grow it at the expense of other proprietary flavors of UNIX. Beyond this, who is better positioned to help customers who want to interoperate Linux with Windows 2000?
