Stuart, according to the Nasdaq site, the trade date is the date on which the market makers are required to report short interest, which in the case of December is 12/10/99. Of course, we can't get the information until 12/27 at the earliest, or 12/28 for most of us, which I personally think is downright corrupt. I have gotten on my soapbox before about this matter, and something really should be done. (http://www.siliconinvestor.com/readmsg.aspx?msgid=10646567) There is no reason on earth that the short interest cannot be reported daily at the close, much the same way mutual funds are required to report their NAV after the close.
