>>Merrill Lynch and Co.'s chief market strategist on Tuesday said he expected a retrenchment in the U.S. stock market in the early months of next year, a move that could set the stage for future gains.<<

Norm, a very interesting post -- thanks for passing it. I guess it surprises me. I would have thought that, as past history dictates, late Dec. and Jan would be up as 401(k) and other money floods the market -- I also thought that Nov 1999 would be down --but it was a grand month -- in any regard, I guess i cannot pick the general market trend but I will tell you that I did buy some JDSU today -- averaging up.

He may be right about the retrenchment in the first few months of 2000 but this quote just kills me.

"We've been in a stealth bear market for a year, a year and a half,' McCabe said"

What exactly is a Stealth Bear Market? Is that where bears wear those silly viking horn caps and stand next to the water cooler and talk about Y2K, sky is falling bull?

I am guessing that the recent sell off is a combination of things. The recent quick run to 270. The NAS sell off. I also get the feeling that JDSU is still a fringe stock. I am only speaking about the general public being aware of them not the quality of the company. But being less well known would mean it would be prone to wilder swings during times of no news.

ML, another one who has gotten it all wrong during this great bull market.
