Gomez names Schwab top e-broker
Charles Schwab (SCH: news, msgs) took top honors in the Winter 1999 comparison of online brokerage sites conducted by Gomez Advisors. Senior analyst Dan Burke said 53 brokers' sites were evaluated for factors including ease of use, and onsite resources.

"Breadth and depth of online features continue to expand," he said, adding that several prominent e-brokers like American Express (AXP: news, msgs) and Suretrade "relaunched their sites with offerings that might have won in previous quarters." Competition in the business is sure to steepen in the new year, Burke said. He estimates the top five brokers plan to spend together $1.2 billion in marketing funds next year. Besides Schwab, the top five brokers rated by Gomez were E-Trade (EGRP: news, msgs), DLJ Direct(DLJ: news, msgs), Fidelity Investments and National Discount Brokers (NDB: news, msgs).
