if it is ture that athm wants to provide free
internet access, that can only prove one thing:
aol is the king and athm is a loser. if cable
speed can't lure people from aol(i don't think
the amount of access fee is that important), i
doubt a slower free access could. athm better
abandom its media service earky but just serve
as an access provider by working together with
aol. i think this is win-win case that people look
for for long time yet it hasn't happened. i just
feel boring to see more worthless free access war.

David, even free Internet access costs money. Trying to recuperate the cost of operating free ISP service (Netzero etc,) via banner ads is not all that attractive to consumers.
