I recently attended 2 different forums on SAN architecture and trends, the underlying technology, and the players who were currently getting traction in that space. One included a significant representation (more than 50) of senior IT professionals from the major financial and insurance companies who are the largest early adopters of SAN technology.

EMC was the clear leader in that space, having regained a leadership position through some good technology acquisition and development. IBM is also a big player, both through their internal technology and a number of recent partnering deals. CPQ is in the game but has drifted to a distant 3rd. The key to adoption by these customers is a comprehensive offering with the deep design services needed to make the pieces work together, and the industry presence to convince customers that the vendor will be around in that space to support them no matter what way the industry goes.

DELL was not mentioned in that context. No one considered DELL as a SAN vendor.

So whatever DELL is planning on doing in that space, the message is not getting to customers...
