And also don't forget that railroads made things possible that were undreamed of before. Much more land could now be put to the plow since rivers were no longer the only long range transportation system. Commerce was able to stretch coast to coast without going around the horn. In the civil war, the south was able to move troups from one theatre to another to meet the greater numbers of northern troops. And unfortunately, it sped up the genocide of native american. Point is, it transformed the economy and our nation in undreamed of way. And those that were slow to use what it offered suffered.
