I agree about the nose ring, MM. If I wore one, it would probably always be encrusted with...well, you know what (ugh!). I guess it can only be worn by those who are never troubled by runny noses. As far as my daughter-in-law is concerned, however, I think it may have been her way of quietly sticking her tongue out at her (alas) bossy & hysterical mother.(Oh, I forgot to mention, Denise also has a stud in her tongue!) But it never occurred to me to ask her why she wears one; it's her business. Since it really doesn't do much for her looks, I dare say she'll stop wearing it some day. Or maybe she won't. So what. Same goes for the tattoo. I never asked. And my son -- the one she married -- is also tattooed: he has two of them, both "meaningful" Taoist symbols. Why did he get them? Because he likes them. And perhaps he wanted the world to know he was a Taoist. My oldest son would never think of getting a tattoo. He doesn't like them. And he's not a Taoist. So it goes. Why do some people feel the urge to decorate themselves, while others (like you and me) do not? Well, most of the former are quite young. Other than that, I haven't a clue. Doesn't really matter much, either, so far as I can tell. Joan
