Yes, as I recall, Eli did say at the CC that the Memory Stick is too large to be practical for cell phones. That's his opinion, of course. But if you compare the size and shape of the Memory Stick with the MMC, you'll immediately see that even if the Memory Stick can fit into a cell phone, the MMC makes the design easier and also allows a smaller size appliance. This is all physical size. But it is also very likely that in terms of performance, the smaller unit draws less current and may even have better read/write speeds. We also know that the double density technology used by SNDK may give a competitive advantage in terms of cost and capacity.

Sony lost out on its VCR betamax format because initially the competing VHS format could hold about double the amount of program material. There is an analogy here, where the larger capacity and smaller size of the MMC is likely to prevail over the Memory Stick where it counts most - in the marketplace.
