3Com Unveils Three New Cable Modems At Western Cable Show

Booth Demonstrations to Showcase High-Performance CMTS Cards, Set Top Box Partners and Home Networking Cable Solutions

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 15, 1999--3Com Corporation (NASDAQ: COMS - news) today introduced a variety of data-over-cable applications at the Western Cable Show in Los Angeles, including three new cable modems. The new products further 3Com's e-networking vision of enabling reliable access and quality of service for users who rely on data applications for daily business purposes as well as education and entertainment. 3Com will demonstrate its new cable modems and its end-to-end suite of cable access products at booth 4531 in the West Hall at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

''At 3Com, we're working not only to provide the best possible broadband experience for the consumer, but we're also committed to being the ultimate partner for the cable operator,'' said Levent Gun, vice president and general manager for 3Com's Cable Access and Home Networking division. ''3Com's focus on development of progressive, hardware and software solutions coupled with the company's years of experience marketing to consumers at retail enables cable operators around the world to quickly develop and deploy their markets.''

Full Line of Cable Modems

At the Western Show, 3Com will showcase its full family of cable modems, including three new additions built on a DOCSIS 1.1 hardware platform. The striking design of the new 3Com® HomeConnect(TM) cable modem is sure to catch the eye of show-goers. The HomeConnect cable modem offers various consumer-friendly features, including user-programmable sounds to indicate connection made, connection dropped, incoming email, etc. As for connectivity, the HomeConnect product currently interfaces with the PC via Ethernet, and will offer USB functionality in 2000.

3Com will also unveil its new OfficeConnect® cable modem at the Western Show. The modem features a sturdy form factor and a standard 10BaseT Ethernet interface. With six operator-defined LED indicators and the ability to support up to 16 computers at one time, the OfficeConnect cable modem is an excellent choice for the small or home office user.

The third new 3Com cable modem that will debut at the show is the 3Com Cable Modem TMI - a PCI-based telco-return cable modem. The internal design makes the TMI an ideal fit for PC OEMs and set top box manufacturers. The modem operates on a non-host based design, which reduces complexity and risk for cable operators, and makes the installation process easy for consumers.

Home Networking

3Com will demonstrate its family of home networking solutions, including Ethernet-based products and the industry's first 10MB phoneline networking products. 3Com's home networking products are ideal for sharing high-speed cable Internet connections, supporting applications such as shared PC accessories, multi-player gaming, and cost-effective ''second outlet'' service tiers when coupled with 3Com's Bandwidth Manager Quality of Service kit.

Announced in October 1999, the 3Com HomeConnect Home Network Phoneline products use existing home phone wires and jacks to connect multiple PCs. Based on the HomePNA 2.0 specification, this revolutionary product line features up to ten times the performance of previous home network products and reliable connections over a broad range of wiring structures. All of 3Com's home networking products feature Microsoft® HomeClick software, which makes network setup and use easier than ever.

High Performance CMTS Preview

3Com will preview a new Cable Modem Termination System (CMTS) router and Cable Management System (CMS) designed for its Total Control® multiservice access platform that offers industry-leading system performance for standards-based data over cable services. The enhanced CMTS features a distributed processing architecture that allows cable operators to scale performance as additional subscribers are added.

3Com's new SNMP-based Cable Management System features a Graphical User Interface that manages all aspects of installation, monitoring, upgrading and network diagnosis for 3Com cable modem and CMTS equipment. The 3Com CMS is a Windows-based product that allows cable operators to monitor multiple chassis at various sites and is easily accessed remotely.

All 3Com CMTS products are tested for DOCSIS compliance and field-tested for interoperability with DOCSIS-certified products from other vendors. 3Com plans to begin customer shipment of the enhanced CMTS and CMS products in the first half of 2000.

Bandwidth Management

3Com has partnered with broadband access integrator Amplify.net to create the industry's first ''ready-to-use'' Bandwidth Manger Quality of Service (QoS) Kit for cable operators that use the Total Control CMTS. The 3Com Bandwidth Manager QoS Kit gives cable operators the ability to offer tiered access services with guaranteed service quality at various subscriber rates. The 3Com Total Control CMTS booth exhibit will feature integration with Amplify.net's bandwidth management and traffic shaping technologies to demonstrate how cable operators can easily enable tiered service offerings for increased services and revenues.

IP Telephony Technology Showcase

3Com will provide a technology showcase of cable IP telephony solutions using its CommWorks® IP telephony platform. The CommWorks platform features a three-tier architecture comprised of media gateways, media gateway controllers and back-end servers for a fully fault-tolerant, standards-based solution. The CommWorks architecture will enable cable operators to migrate voice, data and video traffic onto a single platform to reduce costs and simplify management. Its inherently open architecture also offers opportunities for service differentiation and delivery of new and sophisticated applications to give cable operators an edge in today's competitive marketplace.

Cable Network Statistics in the Palm of Your Hand

3Com will also preview a new Palm Computing® organizer-based cable diagnostic tool. Using this tool, cable technicians no longer need to lug their laptops with them on service calls. The Palm(TM) diagnostic tool enables technicians to verify service availability and show RF statistics for installation and troubleshooting and facilitates faster installations, which leads to more satisfied customers.

I see psion as a bit of a competitor. They sell palmtop computers. They sell mobile connections to the palmtop computers they sell. They sell the os for the computers and other things including cell phones. They may be more of a threat than microsoft now that I think about it.

I see the pda's and cell phones merging sometime in the future. If you say that psion os is better on cell phones, that makes me even more worried.

Anyway, I am just wanting to use psion to try to get an idea of a value of palm.

Thanks.
