"OS for the average user" doesn't really exist. Bill Gates was mistaken. On the other hand, if the World Wide Web were allowed to be defined as an 'OS', that would be it. -- Linux has a place on the desktop workstation. Solaris doesn't really scale down to single CPU x86 boxes very well. I read that Sparc Linux was also faster on the Ultra 5's and 10's. With Solaris 8 being so Linux friendly, it's an automatic to want to partition an Ultra workstation for both now. -- I think Sun's major interest aside from selling more boxes is Java development. They are absolutely PLOWING into Linux with Java tools. Sun wants desktop Linux boxen to be Java delvelopment platforms. If RedHat comes with Netbeans like it does StarOffice and the Sun JDK, I think we're 'there'. -JCJ
