freeus: Tilt. Cisco - probably the preeminent greybeard or silverback gorilla (though MSFT may be close) - had two count 'em two 40% drops in stock price in the past four years.

So gorillas are not immune to market fluctuations, let alone market collapses. And sometimes they drop of their own accord.

But the basic point is correct that over time - the long term - they ride an upward trend and are more masters of their own fate than other companies which are not gorillas, so in that sense are "safer".

But in the short term nothing is "safe". Fluctuations happen.
