Corning shares drop, analysts say fears unfounded

''There is a misconception out there that Qtera (technology) nullifies the need for components. But actually, the technology may create more need for the precise optical components made by companies like Corning and JDS (Uniphase),'' said one industry analyst who declined to be named.

Qtera's technology may reduce the need for some types of equipment such as regenerators, but it may increase the need for amplifiers and other components, analysts said.

That could help specialized fiber optic component makers such as Corning, which invented fiber optic cable more than 20 years ago, SDL Inc. (NasdaqNM:SDLI - news) and JDS Uniphase Corp. (NasdaqNM:JDSU - news), analysts said.
