i decided to call IR...

and boy, talk about a lock-down on information!

the first thing off the bat that the IR person tells me is 'we don't give mid
quarter guidance to anyone - individual investors, analysts, fund managers,
reporters, anyone. this is so that we can ensure that everyone gets this
information at the same time. CPQ has not said anything to anyone other
than the last Quarters conference call and subsequent 10q filing'

after saying that perhaps he could answer some of my questions since they
are not directly earnings related, i asked about layoffs and if he had a figure
of how many have occurred so far this quarter.

'layoffs are on-going' is the answer he gave me. when i prompted him again if
he had a figure, he said, 'we can't say because that would be earnings
related'

when i asked about the status of the CFO search, again the answer i got
was 'that would be mid quarter guidance, and we cannot say'

when i said i would like it noted that i would like to see CPQ use its assets
(CMGI, cash, other investments) in a way which would directly enhance
shareholder value, such as an increased share buy-back, i got the response
'its not just our investments, we are very excited about our partnerships with
CMGI'

an exercise in futility.
