Uncle Frank: You may be right.

But I think you are transferring the Microsoft power into an area where is does not exist now, and many current players are wary of MSFT.

Yes MSFT may wedge in.

But I suggest that you not count on the Q at all re MSFT.

My view of the joint venture was that that was to keep MSFT a little bit separate - off - outside.

The Q wants to be its own gorilla, not a shadow or puppet of MSFT.

And I expect the Q to be very very careful to keep its options open with Palm and others.

And the Q is very important in this because CDMA will be a major force in handhelds and the wireless/internet nexus.

And in wireless and CDMA and in handhelds (including phones), Qualcomm is the established gorilla. MSFT is the challenger.

But we shall see.

Best.

Frank,

If MSFT can get the problems with WinCE worked out, I agree that it would probably be a better Internet Appliance because of the operating system, though I personally don't see a lot of demand for surfing the web on a 3" screen (using current technology, of course).

I think I read there are something like 5M Palms sold and now Visor (which is completely compatible with Palm) is out and I hear the sales on it are huge. The real strength of PALM is as a PIM, not an Internet Device.

Also, doesn't the QCOM PDQphone have a built-in Palm?

Microsoft is undeniably the Gorilla of operating systems.

This is a pretty sweeping statement and, while it might seem correct in everyday experience, I think that one has to be careful about thinking that "operating system" is one category. MS share of the mainframe OS market, for example, is 0%. And its share of the server OS market, while large, is not nearly the percentage it has on the desktop.

Frank,

But as a student of the GG, I see these as OS niches

The number of wireless phones will soon surpass the number of desk top computers. Each wireless phone is a potential handheld computer. If that's only a niche, it's one helluva niche.
