RE:"I guess that's exactly where Via's chipset fits in. Despite its shortcomings (poor performance and maybe lower standard of reliability), Via has the time-to-market advantage here."...

Based on VIAs (Ali and SIS too) past performance with chipsets (takes a few revisions to get them right and they are generally slower than Intels offerings, more conservative timing?) I can see where you are coming from. However, AMD is working with VIA on the KX133 and I've been hearing rumors that they might even be made at AMDs FAB 25.
AMD doesn't really want to be in the chipset business but what they have offered recently, the 750 and the AMD640, were pretty darn good. Of course it's important for AMD to keep a close watch on any K7 chipsets so as to maintain the integrity and stability of the Athlon platform, and rightly so.
Intel has to see VIAs Apollo 133 MHZ chipsets as a major threat, they get you to 4xAGP without the i820 but they will probably have to eat crow on that until Intel gets a viable alternative lest the 133MHz coppermines have no where to be practically implimented.

Tench,
RE:"810 has a 66 MHz processor bus and PC100 SDRAM. 810e has a 133 MHz processor bus, but still has PC100 SDRAM. In other words, it's just a way to shoe-horn a Pentium III into an 810 system.

Solano will finally upgrade the memory channel from PC100 to PC133. In my opinion, PC133 SDRAM is a perfect fit for 810-based systems because of the nice price and performance characteristics.

Confusing, isn't it?"...

It's really not confusing, I just need to write it down. <G>

Jim

Tench,

Re:"solano"

My understanding was that Solano would allow support of PC133 as well as an EXTERNAL graphics chip.

The current 810/810e suck for any performance user due to the crappy graphics performance.

A clarification would be welcome.

Kash
