It's not as common as it used to be, but they can go bad. Either small flaws pop-up, or it just plain dies.

In your case, I'll place my bets with the motherboard, but if you have a chance, snag that RAM and pop it in a similar system. If it passes the POST, run a quick diagnostic on it using something like QAPlus, or Norton for DOS.

If he can spare the $$, you might want to have him bring it in to a local computer shop, and have it thoroughly tested. $45.00 US should cover it.
