As I understand it, the main thrust of that article and other press releases I've seen relating to it doesn't address technologies covered by Gemstar's patents.

Seems to me that MS and AOL are positioning for battle in the livingroom. I will disagree with the above Gemstar's patents observation although correct in its main thrust context of this article. Any TV listings/navigator that Microsoft deploys, regardless of platform and anywhere is the world, is royalty bearing for Gemstar which includes the 45MM upfront fee, $9-$10/unit fee, annual continuation fee tied to the CPI and a 25-30% split of advertising. In the SEC filing, dated 1-12-98, 40-50 Gemstar patents are specified.

I know you know this Mike, just repeating for others.

FWI, Gemstar additionally retains free advertising space from its licensed guides for promotion of its own services/products.
