Motorola and Glenayre Broaden Collaboration Efforts on Leading-Edge Internet Messaging Devices and Services
Companies Accelerate Joint 2-Way Product Development Giving Consumers Best-in-Class Devices With More Choices to Be Connected All From Multiple Sources
FORT WORTH, Texas and CHARLOTTE, N.C., Dec. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Motorola Inc. (NYSE: MOT - news) and Glenayre Technologies Inc. (Nasdaq: GEMS - news) announced today that the two companies have entered into a series of agreements aimed at furthering their mutual goal of expanding the success of ReFLEX(TM) technology-based wireless data, messaging and interactive devices. These include joint market development activities, collaboration on a common 'over- the-air programming' protocol, and a major extension of Glenayre's Wireless Access division's ReFLEX protocol licensing agreement with Motorola to now encompass wireless modules and chipsets for use in such applications as connected PDA's and telemetry. This series of agreements supercedes the MOU announced last April regarding Glenayre's potential licensing and manufacturing of Motorola's paging infrastructure product line.
Both parties will contribute to an initial joint development fund totaling $5 million to promote and fuel growth of the global market for two-way messaging; accelerating and deepening joint applications development and broadening the range of solutions and markets they will address. The leading- edge applications expected from the joint venture will significantly enhance the product portfolio from Glenayre and Motorola, providing customers with communication solutions combining components from leading vendors. This fund is in addition to each company's independent research and development.
The companies also announced that Motorola has licensed use of its GOTAP (Generic Over The Air Programming) interface to Glenayre. This will provide a common interface for over the air programming for both Motorola and Glenayre devices. The companies also announced they are working to further define common interfaces for other ReFLEX modules, including telemetry modules, with the intent of developing interface standards to stimulate market growth of new devices and applications.
Additionally, Glenayre's Wireless Access division's previous license to manufacture ReFLEX products has been extended from belt-top pagers to modules and chipsets. Licensed applications have been similarly extended to include connected PDA's and telemetry. This will allow Glenayre to both manufacture and team with other manufacturers and developers to enable new applications and explore new business opportunities.
''We are very excited to be working together with Glenayre to promote further growth of advanced messaging through the activities sponsored by the development fund. In addition, the expansion of Glenayre's portfolio of ReFLEX products is a key element in the development of new sources of fixed wireless solutions and value-added applications for wireless consumers and wireless users in industrial market segments. We see the combined efforts of Motorola and Glenayre as an important step in creating new services and solutions for ReFLEX systems worldwide'' said Iain Morris, Corporate Vice President and General Manager of Motorola's PCS Americas Group.
Eric Doggett, President and Chief Executive Officer of Glenayre, stated, ''Wireless messaging and data are poised for explosive growth, and in terms of coverage, in-building penetration, notification, and broadcast capabilities, ReFLEX networks are well positioned to benefit from this growth. These market development activities are further evidence of both Glenayre and Motorola's commitment to the continued evolution of ReFLEX. Through our co-sponsored activities, common programming protocols, and a broader addressable market, we will facilitate the emergence of new devices and applications. This is an example of the new Glenayre driving technology and teaming to deliver Solutions for an @ctive World.''
The agreement also establishes a market development advisory board that will direct market development initiatives. The board will consist of six members, with Motorola and Glenayre appointing three members each. Dale Mortimer, Director of Business Development at Glenayre, will serve as the initial chairman of the advisory board.
''We jointly hosted the first ReFLEX developer's conference earlier this summer and it was extremely successful with over 200 participants,'' stated Mortimer. ''Several exciting applications were demonstrated and many more have emerged as a result of the conference. We are pleased to announce that we will be conducting our next developer's conference early next year to stimulate further interest within the developer community.''
Mortimer added, ''In addition, we are targeting various industry forums within the business market, medical community and utilities sectors to enhance awareness of ReFLEX advantages. We'll be educating these enterprise markets about how these solutions can improve the productivity of the mobile and active worker.''
