JDS buys itself a Christmas stocking stuffer

Acquisition-hungry JDS Uniphase Corp. swallowed another company yesterday,
this time a small Nepean-based firm with just 25 employees.

JDS did not disclose how much it paid for six-year-old Oprel Technologies,
which develops fibre-optic signal amplifiers and test equipment for optical electronic devices.

One analyst estimated the price to be around $10 million. JDS co-chairman
Jozef Straus said Oprel will strengthen the company's growing line of products and
improve the delivery time to market.

Emil Savov, an analyst with Goepel McDermid Inc., said the acquisition
is fairly small by JDS' standards but will help the firm stay ahead in the
quickly-evolving fibre-optics business.

"It's such a small company so it's difficult to say how important it is, but
there's probably value in the technology," he said. "There's so much going on they
need all the optical engineers they can find."

JDS is trying to position itself as a large supplier of "complete solutions"
to firms that are building large fibre-optic telecommunications
networks, such as Nortel Networks and Lucent Technologies.

"With Oprel, they're getting some interesting technology, but more importantly
they're getting some expertise," Savov said. Last month, JDS bought
U.K.-based Sifam Ltd. for $140 million and acquired Epitaxx Inc. of New
Jersey in October for $400 million US.
