Labrador: G* is very sensitive to the phones published capabilities. It has been reported the phone works in doors. I would bet it will work in a car as well. An Icelandic SP plans to cover areas where the official G* party line says will not be covered.

They are downplaying the coverage/capabilities in order to not have the customers be disappointed. There are too many variables for G* to place their claims on the high end of the phones capabilities. It is in their best interest to be able to guarantee a particular level of service. That would be one reason for the delayed service initiation - getting all the ducks in a row before you promise anything.

Regarding usage of G* phones inside of cars. There was a
T.V. special a few weeks ago that dealt with the power level
of (analog) cellular phones. As it turns out when you use
your cell phone inside a (metal) automobile the base-station
tells the phone to boost its power level to compensate for
the attenuated signal that it is receiving. There's also
the question of whether it would be necessary to boost the
power of the satellite transmitter (probably too expensive).
Perhaps automobiles should be equipped with a jack in the
dashboard whereby one can connect the cell/satellite phone
to an external antenna -- fewer dropped calls -- less brain cancer.... :-)
