Korea's Chip Exports to Exceed US$20 Billion in 1999
December 16, 1999 (SEOUL) -- The Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy, along with the Korea Semiconductor Industry Association, said total chip exports during the first 11 months of 1999 were US$18.1 billion, up 19 percent on an annual basis.

Total semiconductor exports for 1999 are expected to surpass the US$20 billion mark.

Exports of DRAMs are on pace to grow by an eye-opening 41.2 percent on a yearly comparison to US$7.5 billion in 1999 on the back of robust 64Mb DRAM sales. The KSIA added that total production of semiconductors is estimated to swing up by 21.8 percent to US$21 billion by year-end.

With industry watchers predicting that the chip market will flourish in 2000, the world chip market is expected to expand by 15.6 percent year-on-year to US$177.2 billion, with the DRAM market expected to grow 29.7 percent to US$25.2 billion from this year's US$19.4 billion.

Industry watchers also forecast that facilities investments made by domestic chip makers, including Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. and Hyundai Electronics Industries Co., Ltd., will reach US$3 billion next year.
