It won't make much difference whether you use the switch or use crossover cables for 2 computers. It won't make it harder either. There isn't much difference in cable costs either.

As to the internal versus external DSL, I have the external myself. I didn't have a choice with my phone company. I haven't research the advantages/disadvantages of internal versus external. I have always been partial to external modems myself. Sorry I couldn't help.

This is a late answer so it may not help, but you will find many more options available to you for modem sharing with an external modem. If you still have the choice, I would STRONGLY recommend external.

For example of some options, see the discussions between me and pae here over the past few weeks (pae doing all the hard work <g>).
