Cisco and TI Announce End-to-EndSolution to Enable Data, Voice and Video Convergence for DVB/DAVICCable Standard

December 16, 1999 08:03 AM
LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--December 16, 1999--

Collaboration Brings End-to-End Solutions for All Major Data over Cable Standards to Market

Cisco Systems, Inc. CSCO , the worldwide leader in networking for the Internet, and DSP market leader Texas Instruments (TI) TXN today announced a complete, end-to-end chip solution for data and voice over cable standards. The standards are the OpenCable and Digital Video Broadcast /Digital Audio Video Interoperability Council (DVB/DAVIC) standards. The announcement was made at the cable industry's Western Show.

To further enable the multimedia broadband cable access market, Cisco and TI have agreed to jointly develop cable modem termination system (CMTS) and customer premise equipment (CPE) chips for delivery of multimedia broadband services over cable networks. The chip solution will be based on TI's programmable DSP technology, physical layer, and microprocessor and Cisco's DVB Media Access Control (MAC).

This cooperation broadens Cisco's strategy as the leader in standards-based digital cable solutions to enable global markets for residential broadband access over cable networks and makes TI the industry's only provider of complete, end-to-end cable modem solutions supporting both DVB and DOCSIS standards. TI will market the chips to cable equipment vendors that manufacture DVB/DAVIC-compliant products such as cable modems, set-top boxes and headend routers.

"Cisco and TI are unified in our goal to enable an international market for residential broadband access over cable networks," said Paul Bosco, vice president and general manager of Cisco's Cable Products and Solutions Group. "Our cooperation with TI on a DVB/DAVIC solution demonstrates our joint commitment to the standards-based cable broadband market."

"TI is the only semiconductor supplier capable of delivering voice over cable, end-to-end solutions, regardless of standard," said Eric Dewannain, general manager of TI's Cable Broadband Communications Group. "Cisco and TI share a proven track record in DOCSIS-based solutions that will enable a rapid development of DVB/DAVIC compliant solutions.

The chip solution targets both CMTS and CPE such as set-top boxes (STB) based upon OpenCable, DVB and DAVIC standards, including the EuroBox STB specification and the EuroModem cable modem specification. The chip solution will be compliant with the CMTS equipment such as Cisco's uBR product family, and will meet the interoperability requirements of CableLabs and the DVB/DAVIC. The resulting chips will enable cost-effective solutions for video, audio, data and voice services over cable networks. This emphasizes the compelling multiservice capability of the OpenCable/DVB/DAVIC platform, which allows for the future multimedia convergence.

The agreement between Cisco and TI follows Cisco's recent acquisition of COCOM A/S, a leading developer of high-speed Internet access solutions over cable, satellite and wireless networks based on international standards.
