Z.O: That is exactly how I see it.

NT wants control of the highway. The Switching and Engineering of that highway is to be all Optical without SONET. All traffic entering the high way will have to be in Optical form ready at 100nm + WDDM line width allotted to the channel. After that it is just muxing/demuxing and cross connects.

At the edge they have an unresolved problem. How do you handle the many different protocols , buffer them for speed
differences and QoS requirements, and convert them ready for
muxing into the optical photon stream.

A Switch design that can handle all these functions without
being embroiled in IP over ATM or ATM is likely going to be the winner.

In brief, versatile design ability will win.
