Boom times drive more families to Samaritan House

By Gary Massaro

Patience must walk hand-in-hand with compassion and charity.

That's a lesson Ed Judy has learned in his nine years as director of Samaritan House, a homeless shelter in LoDo.

Judy recalled the story of a man who was a repeat shelter guest.

"He'd get a job," Judy said. "But he couldn't keep it. Finally, someone suggested he talk to a mental health worker."

The man said he wasn't crazy and refused to seek help outside of Samaritan House.

About two years ago, the man changed his mind. He was diagnosed with chronic depression.

Caseworkers helped him get a government pension, and the man now has a place of his own.

During a visit last year to check on him, Judy found the man had bought a new couch.

"I've always had old things and used things," Judy said the man told him.(cont)
