ok, maybe ure right brian.. might want to check this out:

linuxtoday.com

I'm still not sure if joe-enduser will ever sit and
write a letter to gradma on their linux-box. And aren't
most linux users (currently) MS haters? I have no doubt that MS could using the cash previously mentioned, develop a distribution of linux that simply _rewls_ in only a few months, given that red hat, IIRC only has like 100-200 employees. I've been away from things for a while, but has MS had the "players-only" type of meeting about linux that they once had about the internet/netscape during the early 1990s where they concieved IE? It'll be fun to see this develop. If history is any indication...

Linux is doing very well in the server market, but their very limited penetration on the desktop doesn't warrant an Office port in the foreseeable future IMO. Many if not most Linux desktop users wouldn't buy MSFT software anyway, owing to their anti-MSFT religious beliefs.

I'm sure MSFT is watching Linux very closely and brainstorming all kinds of scenarios. For example, I can picture them doing some kind of COM object server for Linux as that would dampen any threat of COM developers moving toward CORBA.

MSFT has already stated that they would be supporting LINUX in various forms.

I'm curious - what are you referring to here?

Brian,
RE:"Some were just questioning why MSFT needs more than a few billion dollars in operating funds available. They need it for things like LINUX, to provide them with the flexibility. If MSFT develops it, and it doesn't become significant then that is just a cost of doing business in high techdom. On the other hand, if MSFT does nothing and LINUX does grow then it has potentially weakend itself. Complacency=Replacement

Embrace & Extend"...

That's very much the answer I would expect from Bill Gates himself. Certainly the personna. I would expect that Gates has numerous Linux options on the table at this time. He probably wouldn't even mind cannibalizing some of his own software for the sake of maintaining
power. looking forward to your replies to other questions.
Regards, Jim
