Yes, there has been pre-Y2K buying to fix things that would surely fail. This will have a very positive effect on future growth because of the added efficiency of using new up-to-date equipment. But, I can assure you that many corporations (including mine) and the Federal government have postponed new purchases that would have gone through in the past few months. The Wall Street Journal had an article about this a few weeks ago.

A while ago I was dreadfully worried about what would happen to all the people who worked the Y2K problem once their success at solving the problem was apparent. Now I'm more optimistic--I think all these purchases (pre-Y2K and post-Y2K) will lead to new software development projects everywhere, and all of us software people will be the beneficiaries. Y2K has been quite a boon for us all, don't you think?!
