We are on different tracks here. I love competition. I belong to an on-line chess club. I consider myself fortunate when someone who is better than me and still willing to play me is on-line. Win or lose I have a good time. I believe in good sportsmanship and think everyone involved benefits. Losing at chess isn't a case of being oppressed or having someone else's will imposed over mine. I play to win and figure when I lose I am a better player if I can see why. This is vastly different than ego trips for the simple goal of belittling someone else or for personal gain when others suffer.

<<the mentor told the kid that to win he had to hold his enemy in contempt (who was actually his friend).>> Liz there was a time in my life that Chess was of some importance to me and I actually gambled with some of the best players in the state.[they gave me tremendous odds of course].I can tell you that many of the best players do indeed delight in treating their opponents with disrespect but this is just a symptom of the enormous ego that is often a prerequisite for doing the vast amount of study required to become this good. It is not at all required to be top dog.
