Monday January 31, 9:47 am Eastern Time Company Press Release EMR Microwave Announces Successful Demonstration of Copper Recovery Process FREDERICTON, NEW BRUNSWICK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 31, 2000--EMR Microwave Technology Corporation (CDNX:EMW. - news; CUSIP #: 268922101) is pleased to announce that it has successfully demonstrated an efficient process for very high recovery of copper from sulphidic ore. In a recent series of pre-pilot tests involving chalcopyrite concentrate from several producing mines EMR was able to obtain copper recovery as high as 99.8% using its proprietary microwave technology. Copper recovery was determined using industry-standard acid leaching techniques. This work was carried out in conjunction with Bateman Engineering personnel in Tucson, AZ and will be published shortly in technical literature. EMR's next phase in the development to commercialization of this process will be the operation of a pilot test on several tons of concentrate at the Company's Fredericton facility. Concentrate is already on site and the pilot program is scheduled to commence in February. This program will yield further technical data necessary for plant and process engineering which is already underway with Bateman Engineering. The pilot program will also provide estimates of energy and operating costs of the process which is expected to compete very favorably with conventional smelter costs. An important additional advantage of EMR's process is its low environmental impact. By operating at relatively lower temperatures than conventional smelters and generating a low volume - high density offgas stream, EMR's process is expected to achieve nearly closed cycle operation by which its own acid generation is utilized for copper recovery. By producing copper oxide directly from the sulphide this process utilizes well-developed and widely recognized hydrometallurgical (SXEW) methods for production of metallic copper. EMR's strategy for commercialization of its technologies, including the copper process, is to provide total plant solutions to operating clients through strong strategic partnerships. EMR Microwave Technology Corporation is a process technology company dedicated to providing applications for the resource industries using proprietary microwave systems. The company's head office, analytical labs, and pilot plant are located in Fredericton, New Brunswick.
