What's better than IP? Morse Code, on a string of wire with redundant and diversely routed backups, if all you are looking for is dependability and determinism in your response times. But I wouldn't use this arrangement to search for information or to distribute multicast program content to a dynamically changing audience population.

So, it's vacuous, eh? I like the way you reasoned your way out of that one, btw. And you did it without citing quantum hypotheses. Not even once. Kudos to you, Doc. Truth be told...

Genakane,

Starting in January, Excite will be the only broadband portal on the web...it becomes the default home page for all @Home subscribers. In this they will get access to the full
array of Excite's, and their strategic partners', on-line services. Similar to AOL today, however, with a few major differences:

- personalization: BB Excite subscribers will tailor, customize their screens and apps as they like...AOL captures you and locks you into proprietary screens/interfaces

- broadband content delivery: we're soon going to see the first portal services custom designed for the fat pipe...I hope it's all that it's cranked up to be...!!?

- targeted ads: similar to personalization....if the subscriber elects, then many of the ads that will appear will be customized per his/her likings. Example, I give them my info, andinstead of seeing a generic company ad, I'll get merchandise for my favorite Oakland Raiders or Washington Capitals, or Nissan XTerra, or Brooks Brothers clothing, etc, etc

Should be real interesting, but you're right. The exclusivity until 2002 gives us a distinct advantage to introduce this new brand of service in a rather benign competitive environment and amass as many subscribers as supportable. However, it will always come back to content to keep those customers, and attract new subscribers after
exclusivity.
