Friday December 17, 4:12 pm Eastern Time RESEARCH ALERT - Globalstar call upbeat NEW YORK, Dec 17 (Reuters) - C.E. Unterberg Towbin analyst William Kidd said Globalstar Telecommunications Ltd. (NasdaqNM:GSTRF - news) held an upbeat conference call and said its handsets are now being sold by distributors worldwide. -- said some distributors are already selling handsets and are ``faring well,' even though full commercial campaigns do not start until next year. -- said distributors are pre-purchasing $25 million in mobile minutes at a 25 percent discount. Said this is evidence of their confidence. -- said universal pricing structure is being adopted by distributors in major markets, which is another positive. -- said one negative is that until mid-2000 Globalstar subscribers will need both a satellite phone number and a cellular phone number. Said it appears that gateways are not yet able to switch a cellular call to a satellite call if a customer is out of reach. -- said handset availability seems adequate and in line with recent guidance. Said the company now expects 40,000 units to be in the distribution channel by year-end and 200,000 units by end of first quarter 2000. Shares of Globalstar gained 3-1/16 to close at 24 on Nasdaq.
