No. As much as I respect Reagan, Beirut was a mistake. The Marines were never intended to be used in the fashion they were used in Beirut. The problem has gotten out of hand in subsequent administrations. The military is a killing machine, not a force for social change. I am dubious about peacekeeping missions in any form. Tying the Marines down to the barracks was basically painting a big fat bullseye on them and it was a tactical mistake with horrific if unintended consequences. I also think that Somalia was a mistake, Bosnia, etc, etc. That does not excuse the HUGE lapses in judgement we have seen from Pinocchio Clinton. As far as the office of the Presidency goes, moral and political judgment are both important. JLA
