This Old House. They redid a house that was the headquarters to a vinery. Did the cooperage bit with it.

<<I'd like to know more about construction but you have to start from the very beginning for me.>>

Did you know a blind carpenter picked up a hammer and saw?

Ark, built by amateurs.
Titanic, built by pros.

I have a fantasy of someday having a custom-built house, so I've bought a lot of books on the topic of construction, and checked out even more from the library. Fine Homebuilding magazine is a great place to start because every page consists of well-shot photographs of things being built. The articles are pretty specialized, but they put out books with anthologies of the articles collected according to a theme, like foundations, roofs, porches. I'd start with "A Place of My Own," by Michael Pollan, a professional writer who describes, step by step, the process of building a free-standing structure he uses for a writing studio. He worked with a professional homebuilder, they built the structure together. A good eye for detail, but at a layman's level. In California, you can visit houses built by the Greene brothers, which I have never seen. I have seen houses by Frank Lloyd Wright. Unbelievable attention to detail, inside and out.
