I was thinking about putting Christmas lights on a tree outside. I love to look at Christmas lights, but I feel guilty about them because they are not necessary, and so endanger the environment unnecessarily. But I am tempted by the idea of wrapping the tulip tree in lights, all around the trunk, and the major branches, all the way as far as I can reach on a tall ladder.

I remember the first time I saw that done. I was driving in Manhattan, and passed a restaurant that had its outside trees, the ones on the patio wrapped, with white lights, I think it was the Quilted Giraffe, near Central Park, and it wasn't Christmas. I was astonished by the beauty.

Maybe it's not really beautiful, maybe it's just ostentatious. I'd use tiny multicolored lights. I can see it in my mind's eye. That's probably good enough.

I was just reading the latest William Gibson book, All Tomorrow's Parties, and came across a quote I thought you might like ~

"I have the impression that people in bars, though they seem to be talking to one another, are actually talking to themselves. Is this because higher brain function has been suppressed for recreational purposes?"

As for your mother ~ perhaps it is better that she did not understand why girls were attracted to you.
