Internet will redefine traditional consultancy

Bodhisatva Ganguli & Sharad Goel
NEW DELHI 17 DECEMBER

RAJAT Kumar Gupta, McKinsey's managing director, is certifiably the brainiest management export from India to the US. After all, he has been elected twice, in a row, as McKinsey's managing director by 250 of its senior partners- whose collective IQ would be well above average.

Traditional consultancy, Gupta feels, would have to be redefined in the Internet age. He plans to do that by combining McKinsey's traditional knowledge of industries and companies with newly-acquired IT skills. On India, Gupta also feels that Indian soft- ware needs to move from low risk contract programing to high risk proprietary software. For that, a risk-taking culture would have to be created. McKinsey's new focus is on creating new businesses. In India it has started India Ventures 2000, which would nurture entrepreneurs in IT and e-commerce.
