Tapes may become obsolete, but when, and won't mine still work? I also believe in DVD's , and think that may be the replacement. But I don't know! (Bad investment, because I don't know)

The key to your next paragraph is, "although you could tape the shows that you recorded on the PVR,if you want to keep them" The key word here is "TAPE" (Bad investment, if I copy to DVD or tape, why do I need TIVO)

"TIVO's first service is to make TV interactive" I think that I would look to Direct TV for that with the backing GM Hughes, they seem to have a step up on the rest. ( Sorry, I see bad investment again)

The next paragraph is hard to disagree with, "But your comments are especially valuable" <vbg> I would add to the mention of CD's and DVD's... At least the DVD technology took into account that people would not want to throw away there CD's and made them compatible. Seems to remind me of " ZIP", boy did they blow it, had the field to themselves, and let it slip away. Although they seem to be going in the right direction now.

I can only say this in parting to your last paragraph. "but I stayed in this one through the drop" I made one of my biggest mistakes and did the same with " Zenith" (bad investment, because I liked the brand, and didn't pay attention to the research that was at my disposal)

Wish you luck in your investing, and hope that I haven't been a bore.

Scott, I saw this piece that may help you in your decision about TIVO. (The rest is on MSN Investor)

Company executives declined to give exact sales figures, but said they were comfortable with analyst estimates of 25,000 units this year.

Replay, by contrast, said sales number were in the "thousands."

"We're holding back right now because we're not in retail and it's kind of a waste of money (to advertise). Next Christmas is really the breakout Christmas," said Steve Shannon, Replay's vice president of marketing.

But the two start-ups are now threatened by none other than software behemoth Microsoft Corp. MSFT , which on Tuesday partnered with satellite TV provider EchoStar Communication Corp. DISH to build video recording into its WebTV service.

Although Microsoft's service is limited to EchoStar customers, its deep pockets will make it a serious rival.
